
Limiting sugar until age two may lower dementia risk, a new study suggests, adding weight to concerns about early‑life nutrition and long‑term brain health.
Study examines post‑war British sugar rationing
Researchers used the abrupt end of U.K. sugar rationing in 1953 as a natural experiment. When the policy was lifted, average sugar consumption reportedly doubled overnight, creating a clear contrast between cohorts born under rationing and those born afterward.
Data from the UK Biobank covered nearly 65,000 participants born before or during the rationing period. The team split the sample into two groups: individuals whose first two years coincided with sugar controls, and those who experienced no such limits. Medical records were then scanned for dementia diagnoses later in life.
After adjusting for age, sex and health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, the analysis found a 23% lower risk of dementia among those who grew up with restricted sugar intake. Among participants who did develop dementia, early sugar restriction correlated with an average delay of 2.6 years before onset.

Brain imaging supports cognitive findings
A subset of the cohort underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Those exposed to sugar limits in early childhood showed a larger volume of grey matter and reduced white‑matter hyperintensity, a marker linked to brain tissue damage. Cognitive testing also revealed modest advantages in processing speed and reasoning for the same group.
These imaging results align with the observed epidemiological patterns, though they caution that many variables influence brain health. Type 2 diabetes and hypertension alone accounted for roughly a quarter of the association between early sugar exposure and later dementia risk.
Because the study is observational, it cannot confirm that reduced sugar intake directly prevents dementia. Genetic predispositions, lifestyle factors and broader environmental changes over the decades also play roles.
The effect is modest.

Nevertheless, the findings highlight how dietary habits in the first 1,000 days—birth to age two—might shape neurological outcomes decades later. Families and policymakers may view sugar restriction as one of several steps toward healthier aging, even as further research is needed to clarify mechanisms and guide public health recommendations.
From a practical standpoint, the data suggest that parents who limit added sugars during pregnancy and infancy could be giving their children a modest buffer against cognitive decline. While the impact is not dramatic, a few extra years of mental sharpness could translate into meaningful quality‑of‑life differences for seniors and their caregivers.
Lead author Jiazhen Zheng, PhD, of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, emphasizes the need for more work. “Limiting added sugars during pregnancy and infancy may be one beneficial step that families and communities can take, but further research is needed to better understand how these early exposures influence dementia risk and to guide public health strategies,” Zheng said.
Future studies may explore whether modern sugar consumption patterns—marked by high‑fructose corn syrup and processed foods—have comparable effects, or if the historical context of rationing uniquely influences outcomes. Until then, the present research adds a data point to the growing conversation about nutrition and lifelong brain health.
