How to Pack Lightly and Avoid Checking Luggage on Flights

One of the most stressful and time-consuming parts of traveling by plane is checking your luggage. There is always the fear that your bags will not arrive at your destination with you. If you are a light packer, you can avoid this extra stress and frustration by only bringing a carry on bag. Changing from a heavy to a light packer isn’t as hard as you would expect.

If you can, always use a duffel bag instead of a rolling suitcase with a hard case. Rolling suitcases don’t always fit in overhead bins, especially if someone else has gotten there before you. A duffel bag is soft and can be smushed and maneuvered into a tighter space.

Know what you want to bring before you start packing. Packing at the last minute usually leads to throwing lots of unnecessary things into your suitcase and you will end up over packing.

When planning outfits, pack neutral colors that can be worn more than once. You will be able to fit more accessories to change up your look than more shirts and pants. Remember, jewelry scarves and other accessories can be packed inside handbags to take up less room.

If you roll your clothing instead of folding it you will be able to fit a lot more in your bag. Plus rolled clothing is likely to get less wrinkled.

If your bag has outside pockets, pack your shoes there. If not pack them last and put them on top of all your clothing.

Undergarments fit nicely in gaps between clothes where there is always extra room. You can also pack socks inside of shoes to save even more space.

Decide what would take up the most room in your suitcase, be it a coat, boots, sneaker or anything bulky, and wear that on the plane.

Toiletries can take up a lot of space, but thanks to the new rule that nothing over 3 oz can be carried on, you will only be able to bring t ravel sizes, which will leave you more room. There is also the option of just buying them when you get to your destination.

Don’t pack anything valuable or important in your suitcase. Instead pack it all in your purse, or if you are a guy, a small backpack. If for some reason you are required to check your bag you want to have your valuables with you.
